Northern Sporades & Pelion |
|
|
A collection
of beautiful and relatively unspoilt islands lying off
the coast of Thessaly and the Pelion peninsula, with
the large island of Evia lying to the south west, the
Northern Sporades are an absolute must see
for Greek lovers and a must do for more
experienced sailors. The islands are renowned for their
superb sandy beaches, scenic pine-wooded hills, pretty
towns and abundant sea life. A national sea park has
been established east of Alonissos.
This wonderful sailing area
will suit more experienced crews who relish the challenge
of some fresh sailing winds and some quieter, off
the beaten track islands to explore.
Our base is the idyllic holiday island of Skiathos,
with its lively town and excellent sandy beaches,
famed as being amongst the very best in the Aegean.
Our westbound Pelion itinerary enters the sheltered
Gulf of Volos, once the home of Jason and his Argonauts
so a natural choice for Seafarers!
Lying in the shadow of the
Pelion peninsula and blessed with countless safe anchorages
and timeless fishing villages, we visit sleepy Paleo
Trikeri and historic Pegadi from where Achilles set
sail for Troy.
After a night at Amaliopolis,
we cross the straits south towards the huge island
of Evia and the lively little resort of Orei with
the remains of its ancient Acropolis guarding
the harbour.
Our route back to Skiathos takes us to Koukounaries,
famed as one of the Mediteranean's best beaches and
a pleasant little resort.
Our Sporades Route explores
the islands including unique Alonissos, traditional
and still undiscovered by the masses with scenic harbours
at Patitiri and Steni Vala, some lovely beaches and
dramatic scenery.
We then head for the uninhabited
islands of Peristeri, Xero, or weather permitting,
possibly Pelagos also known as Kyra Panaghia, with
its single resident and herds of wild goats.
Next the charming Island of
Skopelos, with its capital of the same name, set on
steep slopes overlooking the pretty harbour. Sailing
round to the island's south coast, there are a series
of beautiful sheltered bays to explore such as Agnonda,
Panormos, or Glossa, all with fine beaches and traditional
tavernas to discover. |
